What is Acupuncture?
Traditional acupuncture is used to treat people with a wide range of illnesses. It is very effective as a means of pain relief and is practised predominately by doctors and physiotherapists.
Its focus is on improving the overall wellbeing of the patient, rather than the isolated treatment of specific symptoms. By inserting fine needles just beneath the skin, an acupuncturist can stimulate the bodies own healing response and help restore its natural balance.
What will happen on my first visit?
At your first consultation you will be assssed by the acupuncturist for your general state of health. You will be asked about your current symptoms and what treatment you have received so far, your medical history and that of your close family, your diet, digestive system, sleeping patterns and emotional state.
What does acupunture feel like?
Acupuncture needles bear little resemblance to the needles used in injections and blood tests. They are much finer and solid, not holllow. When a needle is inserted, the sensation is often described as a tingling or dull ache. Needles may be inserted and immediately removed, or may be left in place for thirty minutes or more, depending on the effect required. During the treatment patients often experience a pleasant feeling of relaxation.

Stopping Smoking with acupuncture
There are many examples of people who have had only one treatment and been able to quit smoking completely and there are those who are not successful at all.
When giving up smoking the biggest influence on your success is your own determination and will power. If you are properly focused and have your mind set on quitting then acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment to help you to do so.
Whether on its own or used in combination with other treatments, acupuncture can help reduce the number of cigarettes smoked, reduce the cravings for cigarettes and reduce the symptoms of nicotine withdrawal all of which can lead to long tern smoking cessation.
Group sessions are also available for those who are quitting together see www.to-the-point.co.uk for more information.
